POLICIES, PROCEDURES AND INFORMATION
SCHOOLS/PRE-SCHOOLS/NURSERIES

CHILD PROTECTION

As a registered childminder my first priority is to protect and safeguard your child/ren from all kinds of abuse and neglect. I have a duty to report any concerns or suspicions of child abuse to Social Services.

Any injuries that your child/ren have upon arrival at my house must be logged in my accident book. A brief explanation from you on how the injury occurred will be required and also your signature.

If I make any observations in your child/ren’s behaviour, physical condition, appearance or inappropriate use of language, a specific and confidential record will be set up, quite separate from the usual on-going records of your child/ren’s progress and development. The record will include, in addition to the name, address and age of your child/ren: timed and dated observations, describing objectively your child/ren’s behaviour/appearance, without comment or interpretation; where possible, the exact words spoken by the child/ren. I will seek advice from the Duty Social Worker at the local Social Services Office in accordance with the Local Safeguarding Children Boards and their procedures prior to speaking with you. At this stage your family’s identity will not be divulged. If it is then agreed that the matter should be referred to the Social Services Department, you will then be informed, unless I believe your child/ren may come to further harm.

In accordance with the Essex Guidelines I have to inform you of my responsibility.
PROCEDURE IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE

In the event of a fire, my first priority is to evacuate the children to safety. Our designated area is outside Mr Pings Chinese Restaurant in the London Road. I will then call 999, followed by calling you to inform you to collect your child/ren.

I will carry out fire drills every three months, so that all children in my care understand what to do if there was a fire on my premises.

We will cover all eventualities, ie. whether a fire started upstairs or downstairs.
BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT

I aim to provide a safe, secure and caring environment where the children I care for will learn to respect each other. I believe that part of a child's education is to learn appropriate behaviour in a social setting whifch will ultimately lead to self discipline.

There is a no smacking policy in my house. I will not smack, harm or humiliate any child in my care.

I will always set a good example and reward good behaviour aswell as take action for bad behaviour.

I will not allow bad language from anyone in my house, either parent or child.
I will deal with unacceptable behaviour in a positive way.
HEALTH & SAFETY

The rooms will be maintained at adequate temperatures, well lit and adequately ventilated.

I will make sure my home is hygienic, in a good state of decoration and repair.

I will endeavour to teach the children about road safety. I have various leaflets on road and car safety which I would be happy to let you have.

All children have to have the appropriate safety restraints when they travel in my car. I would ask parents to provide any car seats. Our local council offices carry out a free service where they test different car seats in your own car and make sure they fit properly.

In order to practice good hygiene, children will be asked to wash their hands before and after eating and after they have been to the toilet.

I attended a first aid training
MENUS/NUTRITION

COMMUNICATION

It is very important for the parent and I to communicate.

The best time for parents to come and discuss with me any specific concerns they have would be when they pick the child up.

If there were any serious concerns then I would make a specific time convenient to both the parents and me so that we could sit down and discuss them.

If you have a complaint, you should first direct it to me either verbally or in writing. If I receive a complaint in writing or by e-mail, which relates to one of the 14 national standards, I am required to investigate such complaint, take any necessary action and tell you, as the parent, of the outcome within 28 days from the date of the complaint. If you wish to see a copy of my complaints record, which will be completed upon receipt of a complaint, then please feel free to ask me. If you are not happy for me to deal with your complaint, then you should contact OFSTED direct on telephone number 0845 6014772 or visit their website www.ofsted.gov.uk.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES

I try to actively promote equality of opportunity for all children and families and I will take positive action to eliminate discrimination in all areas of their work. I work in accordance with all relevant legislation, including:

I believe that all activities should be open to all children and families.

My aim is to show respectful awareness of all the major events in the lives of your child/ren and the other children I care for, and in our society as a whole, and to welcome the diversity of backgrounds from which they come.
